Chen Jian (born 1961 in Shanghai) is a professional painter whose artistic career spans more than four decades. He received formal training at the Shanghai Institute of Light Industry and later graduated from the Fine Arts program at East China Normal University. From 1983 to 2007, Chen Jian taught fine arts at several leading institutions in Shanghai, including universities and art colleges, where he influenced generations of young artists. Alongside his teaching career, he remained deeply committed to his own creative practice, participating in numerous national, regional, and Shanghai-based art exhibitions since 1979.
Chen Jian has served as a council member of the Shanghai Lacquer Painting Association. His works are held in public collections such as the Shanghai Art Museum, as well as by corporate and private collectors. His watercolor and oil paintings are widely collected in Japan, the United States, and Canada.
As an educator and scholar, he has authored multiple professional art books. Sketching and Gouache & Watercolor have been published nationwide as standard textbooks for fine arts programs at Chinese universities, remaining in print and widely used for nearly a decade.
